[;)]I’ve spotted two of these weird locomotives in the last couple days. On 10-30-04 I spotted UP SD60 2160 (I have an HO scale model of that one and NO PIX [:(!][banghead][censored]) and ex-LMX (in red, white, and grey paint.) with a big red RLCX on the side where the LMX used to be. It had it’s original number of 8598. One day later, on the 31st, parked on Junland siding just east of Poplar Bluff, MO, was UP SD70M 4528 (last of the first three original flagged UP units), LMX/RLCX B39-8 8513, and UP C44AC 7109. What is the name of the leasing company? Where is it based? Where are they being re-lettered at? Info will be appriciated! Thanks![:D][:)][:p][}:)]
try going to the TRAINS.com fourm go to general diss. Look for a topic that says RLCX somebody posted where it is based at
snice UP TRAIN had a model of a real unit Ihave one it’s CSX 7564 I have seen it 3 times. And it wecked in Gooseneck,NC it’s in a video back and the early 90’s it wecked with CSX 8441 ex UP
No, actually they’re more like ex-BN, but not really. The LMX units were leased to the BN on a “power by the hour” basis, just like the Oakway/EMD SD60s that I think the BNSF still uses. (Anybody know for sure?) And just like the Oakways were painted in EMD demo colors, the LMXs were painted in GE demo colors.
One reason they look like old NdeM units is that they have the same cab as many NdeM “super 7” locomotives. Relatively few Dash 8s were built with “standard” cabs (except on NS of course, they only stopped getting them when GE put the price up so far they finally agreed to wide noses.)
It seems that about six years ago or so we could hardly see a train on the BNSF through our town of Aurora, IL without seeing a LMX unit on it…they were as common falling leafs this time of year…now you don’t see any (or hardly any) at all. Until about eight months ago there were a couple dozen of them stored at the BRC Clearing Yard and I would see them bunched together, stacks capped, in the BRC as I was flying into Midway Airport in Chicago, now…NOTHING THERE. They were in the BRC yard for about two or more years.
Yes they do make their way around the country. I used to see them all the time on the BN before the merger as LMX units. They were also one of the few loco models to have stobe lights instead of ditch lights for a couple years. Here’s a recent train through northern MN with one in the consist.
Actually, I think the reason they look like KCS/TFM units is because they are gray.
I would disagree with your statement that “relatively few” Dash 8s were built with standard cabs, by my rough estimate I’d say it’s more like half… or more than half! SP, UP, Santa Fe, C&NW, Conrail, NS, and CSX (and the aforementioned LMX) all bought standard cab Dash 8s. UP, Santa Fe, Conrail (and also LMS), CSX, and Amtrak bought the widecabs. Of course the Canadians just HAD to be different, BCOL and CN bought widebody Dash 8-40CMs.
Now the Dash 9s, on the other hand, only had NS as “spartan cab” customers, all the rest were widecab.
There was a LMX / RLCX ( Relco ) unit up here in Fond Du Lac,Wi in September. The unit was # 8500.It was hooked up with CSX GP38-2 # 2700,and HLCX ex BN sd40-2 #7175. I got the pix on all three of these units,as well as the UP coal train derailment that happened the same day,on the Southern part of the FDL yard.
The Oakways are almost like the demonstrator schemes, but not quite. Compare some pix, they are slightly different. The LMX/RLCX units are still in the old grey scheme that was seen all over BN before the merger. I can just remember seeing these in Trains in 1993 or 1994 for the power by the hour, they leased even Metro North B23-7’s, yes they were pretty desperate!
Neighter SP nor SSW ever owned any 8-40C. Are we just talking about B models? I know the thread is about only B models. However Mark (fuzzybroken) did not specify only B models in his response. Furthermore, He listed UP for the wide nose locomotives. I do not recall of hearing about UP 8-39BW, 8-40BW, or 8-41BW, nor does UP list them on its roster (http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/locorost2003.shtml). Therefore I am assuming he is including C models.
