I am modeling such a distribution facility. It will have three tracks capable of holding two Auto-Max autoracks or three regular autoracks along with ample area for parked cars. This would represent delivery from the factory for regional distribution. The 1/87 scale cars at wal-mart for $1.67 each has made populating the parking area really easy on the old wallet. The whole area occupies about 60"x 20" area at the end of my yard (wasted space due to 12 track ladder). I am using the walthers auto distribution kit mainly for the trucks that carry the cars.
I am also in design phase of a wal-mart distribution center wharehouse that will have two tracks for unloading a 5 unit well car consist on each track. Not sure how prototypical it will be, but, it helps feed my need to have some sort of intermodel on my layout. Thru trains will pick-up and set-out one or two of the 5 unit well cars (athearn/walthers I have both). I am toying with the idea of spinecars with trailers as well, not sure if I will though. I have that slated to go near the end of one of my pennsula’s it will take up about the same space as the auto distribution facility.
Most of my industries are large. I tend to focus on fewer large industries instead of many small 1 or 2 spot industries. My rendition of the Port of Catoosa in Tulsa (yes there really is a port in Tulsa Oklahoma) is 48"x60", but it does have 6 large customers within it. Then there is the refinery and the chemical plant.
Most of these types of industries require their own train or job to and from the yard. Makes for good operating fun.
