Excellent S gauge layout in CTT

I read the article in which they built an S gauge layout in the Latest CTT. They used the subterranian styrofoam risers made by Woodland Scenics to support the track. I had heard of Woodland Scenics subterranian risers but thought they would only work with HO or N because of the size and because the Woodland Scenics products are mostly aimed at HO and N modellers. I still have used their ground foam and ballast to great effect on my layout. Has anyone used the subterranian products for O gauge? The article stated that the risers were 2.5 inches wide. That might be too narrow for O gauge unless maybe you put two risers side by side to make a 5 inch wide roadbed? Has anyone tried this? Thanks in advance for the rplies.

George

I used the Woodlands Scenic risers and yes, we used them side by side to make a 5" roadbed. They worked like a charm. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately the only photo I have of the risers during construction is a short piece installed just after the track crossed the lower track.

I thought the article for the S gauge layout was very good. [tup][tup][tup]

Buckeye,

Is there a preferred type of glue used to attach the foam to a plywood base?
Thanks,

Jim

What I keep hearing about is a product called Liquid Nails. I have never used it myself however.

George

I’m replacing the track and cork roadbed on one of my mainlines. I used Liquid Nails to hold the roadned in place and there have been a few spots where it was close to impossible to remove the cork from the table top.

Liquid Nails is good stuff, but pretty close to permanent. I’ve used it in re-model projects and the bond will literally be stronger than the materials being bonded. I know they make a special “Foam Board” adhesive for construction projects that does not dissolve the foam as some will - depends on the solvents contained in the adhesive. The foam adhesive is just as inexpensive as Liquid Nails and comes in the caulking-tube type size. I’ve used the foam adhesive and it works well. Look for it at Homer’s or Lowe’s.

Low temperature hot glue gun works well with foam as well.

I used regular old Elmer’s Glue to secure the foam to the plywood and it is holding up as well as the parts I used Liquid Nails on.

[%-)][%-)][%-)] There is no plywood below the foam. See photo below. My construction is similiar to that published in CTT. The foam is just glued to the 1x2 joist with Elmers Glue. It has never moved. BTW, the layout is on wheels so that we can move it around the room to work on the back side.

Jim or anyone else, if you would like bmp files of the plans for the table in the photo, just drop me an email.

Hey Buckeye, don’t you have Chief’s e-mail addy… [(-D] [] [sigh]
Sorry Chief, I just couldn’t help myself…[:-^]

In fact, he was handed copies of the plans when he visited Buckeyeland. Didn’t do much good, did it?. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] The plans were written in English so I assume he hasn’t found anyone in Roseyville to interpret them [:-^][:-^]
