Excited like a little boy on Christmas!! (Rivarossi Allegheny, lots of pictures)

Today, I finally got a brand new Rivarossi HO 2-6-6-6 Allegheny!![:D] I’ve wanted one of these things for 4 or 5 years now, so I’m pretty excited about having it.[:D] Now for some nice close-up shots of it!

Congrats! It looks to be a fine fine model.

Word is a sound equipped version is coming this fall!

The H-8 was truely a work of art. “The Beast Of The East” with a massive 7000 HP at speed. Nothing of the day could touch it (or it’s massive weight for that matter)

Congrats Darth, If it’s half as good as the Italian made Rivarossi you’ll be very happy. I can’t wait for your review, I’ve been sitting on the fence over buying the “new” version or not.

Enjoy your loco and have a good holiday!

Berk-fan–

If I’m not mistaken, this is still the Italian Rivarossi Allegheny, all Hornby did was buy the company and do some improvements to the original–DCC ready, sound version coming out soon–things like that.

I’ve got the first-run Rivarossi from several years back, and it’s just a beauty! Smooth-running, beautifully detailed and a REAL puller–even w/o the traction tires (which came off about six months after I bought it). I’m really satisfied with it, so if the new ones are as good, I’d say that Darth got himself a real Beast for the layout. Just a really handsome HUNK of locomotive!

And Darth: Compare the height of the Allegheney to your other articulateds–that’s just about the TALLEST loco I have. The only loco that’s as tall on my roster are my two Westside Rio Grande L-105 4-6-6-4’s. It even towers over my two Missabe Yellowstones, and that’s saying a lot, LOL!

Tom

Nice unit! All it needs is a little Tsunami loving…

David B

Darth, of two locomotives that I’d dearly love to own, your H8 is one of them. I am happy to hear the excitement in your words since vicarious enjoyment is what I must content myself with for many months now. I take it that you will eventually add all the doo dads and maybe some other details, such as some piping in and around the cab front/firebox sides?

Also, will you hit it with the tidal wave? (Tsunami) A video would be an even better vicarious moment for some of us. [:P]

-Crandell

P.S.- the other loco would be the Y6b. Do they do layaway?

Crandell–

Believe me, save up your dollars and get one! Then hook it up to one of those spectacular coal trains of yours, and you’ll be salivating for years to come. It’s just a BEAUTY!!

Tom

Cost and part number kind sir.

Need more Cuda Ken

Methinks thou hast something there, Tom.

Okay, you’ve convinced me…[:P]

(That was easy!) [angel]

Congrats, Darth, and welcome to the club! [#welcome] I bought one several years ago on evilBay, and unfortunately it had some minor details missing that I had to recreate, but Rivarossi really hit a grand slam with this one. It’s a shame they didn’t survive to fill out their high-end roster, since who knows if Hornby is going to develop anything new under that name.

Crandell, I look forward to seeing your H8 photos in WPF. [8D]

P.S. If anyone needs the complete manual, just click the WWW button in my signature. [:)]

To all of you who said this is a great engine, I completely agree.[:D]

DigitalGriffin, there is going to be a sound equipped version sometime soon. It’s listed on Walthers’s website at $460, which is still over $100 less than the old Italian price for these.[:D]

Berk-fan284, it’s made using the Italian tooling (it still says “Made in Italy” on the bottom), so I’m sure it’s just as good.[:D] I will enjoy it, and I’ll take your suggestion and do my best to have a “good holiday.”[:D]

twhite, you’re right, it IS a huge engine! And since it has a pair of tires, I bet it could almost outpull a Bowser![:O]

davidmbedard and selector, I don’t think I’ll be adding sound to it. I’ve always like hearing the sound of the mechanism running more than a sound system.[:D]

selector, I don’t think there’s really much more to add, except for some piping under the cab, but that might get in the way of the drawbar.

cudaken, the cost I paid was $300, minus tax. I rarely find prices better than that even on eBay, so I think I got a good deal.[:D] The part number for this one is R5454, and than the other one is HR2006. R5454 is the better of the two, since it includes full detailed instructions.[:D]

Kewl! I want one! I’m getting one!

man great looking engine!!!

I had my finger on the order button on one of those yesterday. But I have decided to wait untill they release them with sound wich is suppose to happen in a not to distant future.

Magnus

Hi twhite, I wasn’t sure if it was or not because of some previous posts about the locomotive coming with less details (?) or that these details had to be installed by the owner, that there might have been other changes in addition to less detailed instructions. The Hornby website was also a little less than informative on this before it came out. Although admittedly I was probably jumping to false conclusions. Otherwise it’s one of my favourite heavy haulers that’ll match my personal benchmark (the late production Rivarossi Big Boy, I know the other B Boys are stronger pullers it’s just that my Trix is down for repairs at the moment-broken drawbar).

Cheers Andrew

Andrew

How did you break the drawbar?

I’m curious because with all my locos, the only repairs I’ve ever had to effect (apart from the usual cleaning/oiling stuff) is replacing couplers.

I even knocked over a table the other day upon which a P2K SW9 was sitting and all that broke was, of course, a coupler.

Andrew–

My original 2-6-6-6 came with about four little bags of extra details that I had to add on (putting the chains on the tender just about blew my eyeballs out of the sockets, LOL). And not being an expert on Alleghenies, I really couldn’t tell if the mfr. left out any important details on the model. I just remember that once I got most of the added details on, it looked just like a factory-painted brass model to me. Beautiful locomotive, as I’ve said.

Interesting story–after I had my LHS special-order the loco and it arrived, lo and behold, someone had put an Akane brass Allegheney on consignment. I compared the two models, and couldn’t find any detail differences. And the Akane (which was state of the art for the year it was produced) was selling for $1200, used. For $450, I think I got myself a REAL deal!

About six months after running it, the traction tires came off the rear drivers, and rather than sending away for a new set, I decided to see how it ran without them. I’ve got a section of track that is a short 2.4% grade, so I put on the usual number of cars (thankfully I can run fairly long trains), and the loco pulled just like it did with the traction

Hello Dallas Model Works, I bought it off of ebay (for a very good price) with the drawbar already broken glued it up with CA glue then decided on discretion and ordered the parts for it from the LHS. The owners manual has a diagram on where to handle the engine and tender so you won’t break the drawbar,I’m assuming someone let either the engine or tender to sag enough during handling to break the drawbar. The LHS could only get the upper half of the drawbar the other part seems to be in “limbo” because I managed to time this business concurantly with Marklin/Trix’s being sold off. It’s one of the first production soundless versions, so with the aforementioned goings on I haven’t discovered if there are any other “ailments” afflicting it. I figure if all it needs are the drawbar parts and I can get the last piece I’ll have got the locomotive a lot cheaper than I could have locally short of robbery.

Thanks Andrew
