Expansion plan

I’m out of loco storage tracks so i thought i’d add a track

on the outside edge of the existing siding

with a coaling tower What say you ?

Hi, Terry. Good to see you back.

Looks like a plan. Only question I have is, how do you propose to get coal to the dump at the base of the hoist (which could be under the tower - no additional tracks required.)

It looks as if you’d have to back the hopper and switcher into the engine house to do it. And you’d have to do it frequently - that big steamer can eat half a hopperload all by itself.

Chuck (modeling Central Japan in September, 1964 - with coal-burning steam)

Yes that’s the flaw in the plan

my 0-8-0 plus one hopper car will just fit inside the power plant

and clear the turn out prior to pulling forward and under the coaling tower

the track will be limited to the shorter locos

The colaing tower looks better with some paint

One more coat should do it

If the point is to gain more locomotive storage space, why add a coal supply track to a coaling tower? They wouldn’t store engines on that track.

Wouldn’t it be more useful to add a “ready track” to hold locomotives?

Good point I hadn’t really thought about it that way

The second set of crosovers may seem redundant but it alows bigger locos

to cross over to the outside track without going into the power plant

i’d like to include the tank car to fuel diesels but i’m not sure if i should leave the wheels on and set it on a short piece of track or build a timber frame under it

Lookin great so far, Terry. I’d buld a timber frame around the tank car, then it couldn’t roll anywhere (prototypical).

Ok

Got the tracks painted and ballasted

and sprayed the coaling tower with some dull coat and gave it an ink wash

Waiting now for a sanding tower i bought on e-bay

Take the car off the tracks and leave it on the ground. Even more prototypical. [tup]

A car off the rails isn’t going anywhere if it’s on (near) level ground. The reason cars move so easily on the rail is because of the lack of friction and the amount of contact on a specific surface.

I added 2 fueling towers

and a sanding tower
