Export locomotives

The caption says they are export locomotives. Why are they covered?

Most export locomotives are covered with tarps to protect them from the elements while they are aboard ship.

Thanks,

Never would have thought that.

Chris

If I just paid 2 or 3 million dollars for a new locomotive you can bet I would insist they be covered and hopefully windows covered with plywood.

Next years models, not yet announced to the public.[:-,]

Are the gondolas for protection or could they be carrying extra material, or return of the tarps?

Dave, in Eddystone Pa. is Penn Terminals and they ship out GE export loco’s sometimes. They are always covered, some of them were going to Brazil which is a different gauge than here in the U.S. The loco’s going to Brazil have old 3axle trucks under them that are stripped of traction motors and such, I don’t recall if they had working brakes, maybe thats what the gons are for.

The gons may be transition cars between the couplers on the new units and the US standard couplers.

I would think of like when they ship new cars. They cover them to a point with that white stuff, new stuff, people like to keep it clean.
