I am using EZ track on my layout. I am experimenting with different types of material to keep the noise level down. Currently, I am using rubber based shelf liner on pink foam board (not permanently glued yet) is reducing the sound level by about 50 percent. Anybody have any other suggestions or material used?
Thanks,
Dennis
What you have is pretty good. The thicker the rubber, the better–up to a point. When you add the adhesive that will also help deaden the sound–if spread out thoroughly. Double sided foam tape in certain areas works good too.

Try flipping a couple of sections upside down and filling them with plaster. You’ll notice a big reduction of the hollow sound.
I’m using homosote under the track and it’s pretty darn quiet.
EZ track is hollow so whatever you decide to use as a base, soundwaves will still have a chance to bounce around between the rails and the roadbed. As Hamiltnblue suggested, you might have to fill the track with something. If plaster is too heavy you could use Great Stuff expanding insulation foam. Or, if you have a belt sander, you could sand off the bottoms of the track pieces.
Bingo. Sound is produced by pressure differences and vibrations. Get rid of the vibrations, and no sound.
But to do that you would have to get rid of the trains. [:-^] And without trains why have the track. [swg]
Thanks to all for your replies. I will keep experimenting.
