F unit window

Simple question here but could F unit side windows in the cab be opened? If yes, I assume they didn’t exactly ‘roll down the windows’ so was it like the typical fast food drive-thru type window that opens sideways?

IIRC, the side windows did roll down, and they did have a hand ‘crank’ much like a car for rolling them down(remember EMD was a part of GM). I doubt if there was ever a ‘power’ window option…

Road switcher units have a split window that slides horizontal into pockets in the cab wall.

Interesting, thanks.

I recall if you checked the right option block, not only could your get power windows on Fs and Es but also a 45 record player with an under the dash chromed mounting bracket. The latter came with several 15-inch speakers mounted at ear level to overcome the noise from the 567 mounted 6 feet away…

Correct, F-unit cab-side windows rolled down when they left the factory, both the engineer’s and fireman’s windows and the door windows, using cast zamak hand cranks that looked like they were borrowed from a parts bin for a 1946 Chevy (and might well have for all I know). The E-unit windows were the same part number. When FRA 223.17 glazing was mandated, the engineer’s and fireman’s windows became sliding windows, the door windows became fixed panes that did not open, and all of it very ugly. The 223.17 glazing is easily identified by the broad aluminum frame around the window opening that rests on the outside of the locomotive carbody. It’s a simple slide-in, screw-in application.

Would’nt that have been a 78 record player…[;)]

Depends on which vintage F Unit. But probably too early for the 8-track option. [:O]
