This morning, a dentist appointment took me to Altoona, PA. I passed by the famous Juniata Shops and noticed some EMD F Units in NS Black. I had thought just about all F Units were retired, except on a few tourist lines. Am I mistaken?
NS owns an A-B-B-A set that they use on their business trains. They live in Altoona and travel all over the NS System. They are only used for business trains and special events. They are not in regular revenue service. The internet is loaded with pictures of them, like this one: http://railpictures.net/photo/622338/
Aha! I kind of had a feeling that might be the case. From the street, they looked well maintained.
What is the fan assembly on the rear top of the A units? Also has a pair of looks like exhaust mufflers? Where the Steam boiler would have been, could it be a HEP adaptation?
The paint is black. The pattern, however, is a Southern Rwy scheme.
