F3A - Passenger vs. Freight

The gear ratios and speeds I listed are directly from an EMD publication and specifically noted as applying to the F3. But they are based on a recommended tractor motor rpm limit of 2500.

One might assume those limits were stretched if the load was not causing any high current or overheating…

So those locos may have very well had 56/21 gearing.

The DL-109s were actually ordered with that purpose in mind! Very interesting locos, with quite unique stylings. I love them, hopefully Atlas will do another run of them with the old LL toolings in N scale (I believe they acquired them from Walthers, don’t hold me to that though lol)

Something I came across recently that I think Rich will enjoy. Perhaps a few others, too!

One hour, sixteen minutes, 43 seconds? Utter cruelty, Ed. But within the first few seconds of the video , what should appear? My cherished red/gray Monon F3A. Ok, I need to set aside some time to watch the entire video.

Ed, I finally found time to watch the entire video. It is a gold mine of information on the Monon. It reminds me of a DVD that I purchased some years back that focuses on Dearborn station and its 5 owner roads plus its primary tenant, Santa Fe. Hundreds of photos of locomotives, passenger car consists, etc. So much information, so much value.

Glad you got something out of it, Rich! I should have mentioned the Milwaukee Road coverage toward the first part. One thing I learned was that the maroon stripes on the Fs were outlined in gold. Never noticed that before.

To me, YouTube is sort of like a grocery store. There’s LOTS of junk food but if you look carefully there’s some nourishing items scattered here and there. Eat the meat, spit out the bone!

Cheers, Ed

That is something that zi need to start doing. I am very good at finding stuff by Googling, but I have never thought about searching YouTube.

Rich

Yes. Like sorting the wheat from the chaff. It is there. Just got to find it.

David

Yeah, but it takes time to go find it. And, in the case of the video that Ed posted, the title gives no hint that the video is all about the Monon.
