FA1 Mars light

Hi Guys,

I’ve just picked up an FA1 & FB1 set (Reading road) - my question is would the A unit have had a Mars light fitted and if so where on the roof?

Thanks,

Ian

Based on photos I have seen and a “No MARS” description on Walthers website for Proto 2000 FAs. I do not believe they did. Here is a Link to photos of Reading locos. Scroll down to the #300’s for the FA’s.

ALCO ‘F’ units (FA FB) were designed for freight service, as were EMC FT’s. Post war shortages made some roads use them for Passenger service via painting or regearing. MARS lights were later mandated for all Passenger service - and in ALCO’s case - first appeared on their ‘P’ (PA PB) engines. Whether used on FA’s, depended on the Railroad.

Santa Fe’s original F3 order came painted and geared for passenger with a single headlight, and their Mars lights were added later. MY GUESS is Reading F’s had no Mars lights since it was for freight, and 'P’s were available, but it’s only a guess.

Your best source would be a book on the Reading with pictures.

On Reading? NOPE, NONE

Thanks guys, now when it comes to installing decoders I don’t have any extra work to do.
