Since there is such a great collection of signs available online I thought I would share a technique I worked out to add them to the sides of brick buildings.
Today I added a step-by-step pictorial on my blog to create signs like this one.
This is a new version of an old technique. Distressing paper signs and then gluing them on buildings has been around a long time. I first saw it demonstrated by George Selios in the first of three Allen Keller videos about his F&SM railroad which came out in 1988. I’m sure the technique was not new then. Just last night DIY’s Working on the Railroad program showed how to do this. The new twist is using computer graphics to distress the sign rather than sandpaper or other abrassive material. The idea has merit. I might give it a try although you still will have to thin the sign to make it appear painted rather than glued to the brick surface.
it simply amazes me how so many people can do things that i’ve never heard of before(techniques). great web site and presentation.thanks! i to have this site bookmarked.terry…
No, a digital camera would not work as it is important that the wall image is actual size. Scanners will produce a file that will print out the exact same size whereas a digital camera would be very difficult to get the final size perfect.
