About 10 years ago an article, appeared in Trains, magazine, about the New Haven FAirbanks-Morse P-12-42 dual mode locomotives, the train the John quincy Adams, the locomotive which had swing hanger trucks, had the third rail equipment bolted to the rear of the journal box, which showed that swing hanger trucks could have 3rd rail pickup shoes, mounted on them,I am trying to get a reprint of this article. This was before the FL-9 was built. The locomotives were also called the Speed merchants,an extra fare train to rival the merchants Limited also on the New Haven. The train also ran from Boston,South Station,to Grand Central, the train would as soon as it entered 125th st,convert to electric operation, and run to Grand Central in electric. Thanks for hearing me out.
A total of four Speed Merchants (FM’s own name for the P12-42) were built, two for NH and two for B&M, each bracketing a single trainset. The NH locomotives included third-rail shoes for operation into GCT, the B&M locomotives did not have them since they didn’t need them.
