Fall Colors along the Mississippi

If anyone else has an opportunity to shoot the BNSF or CP lines in the Mississippi River Valley (between Wisconsin and Minnesota), the colors in the area are spectacular right now. The area south of Lake Pepin looks like it will be peaking this week if the rain and wind doesn’t do too much damage.

stunning shot.

No doubt, beautiful shot there south of Lake City; know that area well as I drive down “My Mainline” all the way from St. Paul down to Marquette when I go to my hometown in northeast Iowa. There’s a LOT of good places, for sure and you picked an excellent day to do it.

GREAT SHOT MY FRIEND !

MUST BE NICE TO LIVE WHER YOU HAVE A FALL AND RAILFAN IN PLACES LIKE THIS…WOW !THANKS FOR SHARING…

thank you for posting the picture. it’s terrific.

Does the EMPIRE BUILDER take that route?? - a.s.

Yes, the Empire Builder follows the Mighty Miss from LaCrosse to Winona. I’m not sure if the river’s in view beyond that.

Indeed it does. We spent the morning and early afternoon down the track a ways waiting for it, but some high clouds rolled in and messed up the shot:

Thanks all for the kudos.

…Yes, a beautiful shot…Brilliant colors and great subject material.

And those high clouds add texture!

We visited colleges in Lacrosse and Winona this weekend. Talk about some spectacular scenery!

Winona was our daughter’s second choice behind UNI- beautiful little campus there. My wife’s cousin’s son goes there now, I think he’s a junior this year- Zach Cassill. He’s an aspiring pro fisherman.

Oh, and beautiful shots there Ottergoose![tup]

It’s 300 miles from home, and his mother thinks we should have gone there when it wasn’t so pretty, although I’m not sure when that would be. On our trip through LaCrosse, Winona, Rochester & Mankato, I got to hear about a dozen trains, but only got to see two live trains. One was a CP mixed train from a distance. The other was a DM&E grain train blocking our path for 10 minutes, before we turned and took a different route.

Brian & Murphy Siding,

Which one - Winona St. or St. Mary’s? Both beautiful campuses to be sure (and this is coming from a U of Iowa grad and now firmly a UCLA Bruin). Winona’s a great town and a very good friend of mine is the head coach of the womens basketball team at St. Mary’s.

Oh yeah, the action on the CPRS in town isn’t bad either and you’ve got the green and orange right across the River as well.

I was referring to Winona State- didn’t know about St. Mary’s. Many of the students at Winona St. have a great view of the AMTRAK depot from their dorm rooms!

UCLA??? TRAITOR!!![:P][;)]

Yes. An eastbound Empire Builder goes along the east bank of the Mississippi from downtown St.Paul to Hastings MN where it crosses to the west bank, it then follows the west bank until it crosses the river at La Crescent MN - La Crosse WI and heads towards Milwaukee…about 120 mi. or so total along the river.

I’ll be taking the Empre Builder out of Chicago next Tuesday and going as far as Red Wing, MN that day and taking it back from St. Paul on Friday of next week as well. I am really looking forward to seeing the fall colors at their peak.

We looked at both. Our son really like St. Mary’s, not so much Winona State. His graduating class is 175, and a big school might be too much of a transition. Then, we went to Mankato- something like 17,000 students![:O]

Just from having spent time on that campus (and the town as well) SMU is just a great place. Very friendly atmosphere there and it’s tough to beat.
