Fallen Flag Sightings, June 2005.

Recently how many fallen flag cars or locomotives have you seen on passing trains in the last few weeks? The other day on the NS Harrisburg line I saw a string of Soo Locos pulling a load of Conrail coal, Southern boxcarsw, and a few NW cars.

theres a penncentral grain hopper plus a frisco coal hopper in the defiance yard now.

I have seen several fallen flag cars including DT&I autoboxes and gonds, Erie Lackawana open hoppers, RDG open hoppers, WP boxcars, L&N covered hopper, Algoma Centreal gondolas and Northern Alberta Railways boxcars.

Caught the last DRGW SD40T-2 on Wednesday, the 5401, on its trip back to the U.S. from a 3-month stay in Canada

These things seem to happen in waves. Just lately I’ve seen a Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern boxcar (looked really old), a Lehigh Valley covered hopper (a Conrail repaint-job had faded), a number of DT&I hi-cube cars (still quite a few of these in service) and a few of the Erie-Lackawanna hoppers mentioned previously…

Every once in a while, maybe an MP car out here in CA. I wish I would see more stuff like DTI. Seems like they are getting fewer and fewer though.

Just yesterday, I saw a Southern boxcar in the Melville, Sask. CN yards, complete with “Southern Serves The South” and “Giving The Green Light To Innovation” slogans. Also this year, in the same yard, I saw a LV covered hopper that fits the description of the one Carlton Vickers saw. I’ve also seen EL covered hoppers with the over-painting fadng off. On CN, I’ve seen some Lake Eire, Franklin & Clarion open hoppers. I also see many covered hoppers of Soo Line, IC, MILW, C&NW and SCL/L&N, but those aren’t rare sightings around here. WC and BC Rail are fallen flags, but they’ve only been merged into CN recently, so again, those are common sightings. A real treat for me is having a boxcar still wearing CP’s old script lettering sitting on a siding in town. Not a fallen flag road, but a long-defunct paint scheme, so it should still count as a fallent flag.

I used to see quite a few of these LEF&C hoppers around here in the 1980s and early 90s, frequently in whole trains…

Last Sunday, I caught a southbound coal train on CSX’s River Line with two Frisco hoppers mixed in with an otherwise solid set of CSX and Conrail cars

There are always a few old Great Northern and Northern Pacific boxcars in Bruster Washington near the apple storage buildings.

Funny how there are actually 3 SD40T-2 left in Grande garb. 5401 is actually in Illinois as I write this. 10 GP40-2 and 1 SD50 left as well.
