Can anyone tell me about Farmville, Iowa? Is this a railroad, town, or small company that has a railroad. I recently saw a grain car by where I park my car everyday near a grain elevator. It was lettered in Farmville, Iowa and was gray in color. I am an N scale modeler and have seen a couple of N scale manufacturers offer graincars in the Farmville, Iowa scheme. Anyone?
Why don’t you go to a search engine (Yahoo, Lycos or whatever) and type in Farmville, Iowa and see what comes up? My guess is it will answer your questions with a little looking around. Mike
The railroads offer rates to elevators in their own cars and lower rates in cars that the elevators furni***hemselves. For this reason many elevators, co-ops, and grain buyers lease cars from the car leasing companies to take advantage of the lower freight rates. The Farmville, Iowa, Co-op evidently is one of those leasing cars and decided to put its name on the car (not all bother as it costs money). If you look at the reporting marks, you will see they end in “X”, indicating a non-railroad controlled car.
