I’m considering using track shelving for my new around the wall layout like these:
I am planning to drop a plywood along with foam for the base. My trouble is figuring out how to put a fascia on something like this. Does anyone have any ideas that won’t require me to be a woodworking expert (that’s the reason I’m going with the prefab shelf design)?
I took plastic For Sale signs, cut them into 3 1/2 inch strips and stuck them to the edge of the foam with caulk. For the skirting, I used landscape fabric. I glued clothespins to the underside of the foam, to hold the fabric.
Plastic sheets work well, as would linoleum flooring. All you’d need to do is cut a straight line. I’m planning on using 1/8" thick Masonite cut into 6" wide strips. Since I don’t have a panel saw frame at home (who does?) I’m letting Home Depot do all my cutting for me.
This looks like a great solution to me. I can even use the 2x2s to extend the lenght of the brackets a bit if needed. How did you secure the 2x2s to the brackets? Did you drive screws up from the bottom?
Yup. Exactly how I did it. Made attaching the plywood top easy too and more secure since I can drive a 1/2" screw into the wood block, rather than trying to precisely line up a screw to those bracket holes.
Using the braces to the extend the length is great too. I only went out another 3 inches from the brackets, but probably could’ve gone more if I wanted too. I wanted to maintain a 15" depth all the way around to keep it more “shelf” like and not fill the office too much.
How long where those screws at the base of the brackets? It looks like you would need more than a 1/2 inch screw to reach the 2x2? My brackets will likely be around 24 inches to start so I might have up to a 30 inch shelf.
Thanks for all the help. This is looking promising.
Or another idea. If you have access to a table saw, you could make a 1" deep saw cut down the middle if the 2x2 wide enough for the metal bracket to slide into. A bead of construction adhesive in the saw cut should hold it fine.
