Fascia Skirt

I am at the point of adding a skirt to the bottom edge of my fascia to neaten up the look of my layout and hide my storage underneath. The fascia is painted flat black and I plan to purchase a synthetic material from a fabric outlet of similar color.

I am unsure how I will attach it to the fascia; velcro, fabric tacks, snaps, etc., and wanted to get forum readers comments on attachment options and on a broader base, do you even cover the bottom of your layout at all?

Our club uses velcro to attach the skirts to the bottom of its modules. We have removed it and put it back on every time we set up the modules for display. It still works very well. I would recommend getting the velcro in long strips and attaching it all along the top of the skirt. I think the velcro was obatined from a large fabric store.

I agree with Omaha53. Velcro sounds like a good idea, however if you wan’t to be able to slide the skirt back and forth, then you can probably attach some kind of curtain system like this one; http://www.qualitycurtainhardware.com/product/AT-2. That’s what I’m planning on using.

Good luck!

Velcro strips, in a color matching the facia board around the lowest deck. My wife does them and hangs them, I just enjoy.

I use wood spring loaded clothes pins.

I put a small diameter screw the center of the spring and screw it to my benchwork so it is setting sideways.

The skirt can be inserted by squeezing the ends of the clothes pins and slip the skirt right in.

I use the Black Landscaping Cloth (comes in 36" & 48" widths & 100 feet long) for about $15.00 to $20.00 a roll. This is the cheapest skirting I could find. As I have used over three rolls so far this was important!

I can fold the cloth over for the height I need and I do not have to cut it. This way I can reuse it when I make any changes to the layout. And the wood clothes pins are maybe $2.00 for 50 at Wal Mart.

I can flip the cloth up easily to get at anything I have stored under the layout.

Ditto on the clothes pins and landscape fabric…

I just used curtain rods

I used velcro and attached it to the inside of the fascia board , my bride pleated the curtain every two feet and it looks great. It really adds to the overall effect of the layout.

UncBob,

I love the simplicity of your layout, but would you please add a freight yard on the left side of the layout. That vacant piece of real estate is killing me ! [:#]

If you are a subscriber, then you can look in the Cody’s Office index for an episode where David Popp redoes the skirting on the MR&T.

I do remember the Cody’s office episode you mention. They used snaps and, I think, mounted the skirt outside the fascia.

This weekend I purchased wooden clothespins and landscape cloth. With my hot glue gun, I was done in less than an hour. Thanks for everyone’s input.

Summer is over so I will get back to the layout

First have to get the clouds and backdrop

Haven’t decided on the other side yet

I use velcro but then again mine isn’t up all of the time. As far as a cloth, I use Commando Cloth which is used in the movie production industry. a.k.a. a heavier version of Duvatyne

Here’s just some food for thought. I use magnets from K&J magnetics as an alternative to Kadee uncompling magnets.

They have just introduced a new product as an alternative to Velcro.

Here’s the link. http://www.kjmagnetics.com/blog/index.php/2010/09/29/sewing-magnets/
