Better get those tunnels built ASAP!

Since when did Amtrak operate with a profit?

The theory is that the Northeast Corridor operations are profitable - but only if you don’t count capital costs. They claim that Northeast Corridor “profits” are supporting the long distance trains when they should be reinvested in the corridor. This view assumes that that the long distance trains are losing more than they receive in Amtrak’s operating subsidy.

If this view is correct, Amtrak should have more capital for the Northeast Corridor but less money to run long distance trains. Of course, when capital costs are considered, it may be the Northeast Corridor that is the big loser.

Same question I have Lawrence . WHAT profits are they refering to? Unless they can operate without any Gov. $$ they are not profitable. Profits are what’s left over AFTER you pay ALL of the bills, not just rearrange them.

The tunnel can’t see, so it has no “sight”. The press conference was held near the future SITE of the new tunnel. Jeez! And, I’m glad to hear that there is progress on the tunnel idea.

I’m all for building the new tunnels, but I don’t want to see the national network shorted in order to do it.

I’n confussed about something. They will spend millions to do another environmental study and yet the new tunnel will enter the crossing point for the tunnels in the exact same location as the other project that was shut down because that is where the existing tracks are. So why do another study when one has already been done? They are talking of a price of millions to do this new study.
