Fastening homasote roadbed

Please tell me how you fasten HOMASOTE roadbed to plywood subroadbed. I am interested in Homasote only. I was not able to search this topic with the new forumn setup, like I would have been able to with the old forumn setup. Thanks for your replies

I have used homabed for many years, much of it was fastened down in the 80’s and 90’s. I used white glue, later the waterproof white glue, and “tacked” it with small nails not driven totally into the plywood so they could be removed later.

There are probably newer and more sophisticated ways, but none of my road bed has come loose or up since being installed unless I removed it on purpose.

I don’t know about there in the “Land of Hanging Chads” but out here in the far, far reaches of the wild, wild West we have this stuff we call glue; I have used a brand called Elmer’s Woodworking on my last couple of layouts. Works Great!

Have you tried the “Search Community” box immediately to the right? The next page, after you hit the search button, has a search options link that allows you to get more specific . I have found it very useful.

DC I know about the Search Community but when I typed in homasote roadbed up popped spline roadbed, roadbed from pvc pipe, wood planer for spline roadbed all irrevelent to what I was asking. This happens on other topics I look up also. It seems that the search keys on a keyword,in this case it was roadbed. Look up soldering stations and see what pops up. This is why I at the present time favor the old search engine.

Bob,

I use scraps of 1/2" plywood in roughly two inch square pieces screwed down tight to hold the homasote while the glue dries.

I apply the glue and then use a drill and 1" drywall screws (predrill the screw holes) to screw down the plywood pieces on top of the homasote and act as a clamp while the glue sets. When the glue is dry, I use the drill to remove the scraps. The scraps spread the force of the screw over a larger area and do a good job of cinching the homasote down to the plywood. This method does leave small holes which I fill before sanding and painting,

Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you -with the new setup and all, I thought maybe some wouldn’t be aware of it yet.

If you want to search on multi-word phrases, put the phrase in double quotes. i.e. “homasote roadbed”.

Hope that helps.

I use 3/4" drywall screws and white glue. Spread the white glue liberally, the “clamp” the homasote with the drywall screws and then remove them the next day after the glue has dried.

I use liquid nails and drywall screws.

Yellow wood glue and drywall screws.

I just put an addition on my layout using homasote for my roadbed and used Elmer’s Wood Glue and nailed it to plywood using a Porter Cable brad gun with 1 1/4 brads. Works great and no “banging” with a hammer to loosen “stuff” up.

I used exactly the same method as PASTORBOB and had excellent results. Hasn’t been any problem over a couple years. Enjoy your roadbedding work!
