I saw this on another thread and had thought about attempting it myself. I wanted to use faux fur to replicate grain fields. Does anyone have any tips or input?
Here are two fake fur articles for your library…

I picked up the 9th printing of Scenery Tip & Techniques with fortunate eBay lack of bidding.
Eric Bronsky’s flowing prairie grass in the middle of a traction layout, culverts and all, literally transports you back to circa 1950. It is so much better than Jack Clark announcing: “You are there!”
Picture #3: Combing out the loose fur is just like grooming a pet, except the fake fur doesn’t bite.
The article even goes into how to give the fake fur subtle coloring variations, and; how to glue the fa
I have expermented a little with fake fur and with some real mink fur from my mothers old coat. It looks ok for weeds and grasses if you trim it some and add a lot of other weeds and sticks. Using it for a grain field sounds unlikely so I will be interested in what we learn here.
Add some fine turf on the top of the fake fur for grain heads:

That’s a good assesment, and Eric Bronsky’s article doesn’t model a grain field.
If he had not called it prairie grass, I would have thought it was field grass like we have in Western Pennsylvania in the mountains. The article’s terrain looked like the topography of the Ohio/Pennsylvania border with rolling hills and flatlands.
Just a thought: Using faux fur is probably better than using real fur because you wouldn’t want to be summoned into court by the PETA-ites to set a legal precedent under appeals to shut down model railroads with grassy terrains. The next tme you know, they’ll be using static electricity to make grass stand up and look just like the real thing!
