We all must be able to relate Alco with the Big Boys and PA-1, so what is everyone’s favorite Alco diesel engine and steam locomotive?
I really like the C420, and the FEF-3 Northerns.

Easy for me…The RS1.
HI GUYS & GALS
I must say the RS-11 , RS-12, and the C420 !
I hope Atlas still plans on finishing the last batch of C-420 engines.
I had a pre-order of 1 Lehigh Valley & 1 Delaware & Hudson engine.
RS3. I have 6 workable ones, although 5 are either undec or in a really bad rendition of Reading paint and need to be repainted, only 1 is actually Reading at the moment.
Plus enough parts to probably make at least one more runnign one, in either PRR or L&N paint (puchased for the chassis parts).

RSD-17, the Empress of Agincourt the only one ever made & it still exists even though it’s non-functional due to truck problems
The ATLANTIC CENTRAL has a fair number of Alco diesels, 3 - PA-1’s, 1 - PB-1, 4 FA-1’s, 4 - FB-1’s, 3 - RS-3’s. The FA/FB’s are typically run as ABBA sets.
Also on the property are a number of WM RS units and B&O FA/FB units.
The PA-1’s are in many ways a favorite, but the FA/FB sets are also popular with mainline freight crews.

Diesel: HH600 switcher
Steam: 4-6-4 J1-e Hudson (2-8-2 H-10a Mikado, a close 2nd)

RS-1. It just looks like a locomotive for the working day. Nothing pretentious about it. Probably my favorite diesel, regardless of manufacturer or era. Next favority Alco would be C420.
For me it’s a toss up between FA2-FB2’s and RS1-RS3’s. DJ.

This is a close second but I must say the RS-18 is my favorite. RS-23 is also up there. So I guess these are my top 3 for Alco/MLW diesels. I have no steam favorites.
For steam, the NYC’s J1e Hudsons and for diesel…wow! so many. The RS-1, RSC-24, RSC-13, any of the 6-axle Centuries and the Montreal versions, most of the S-series switchers, the FA-2, and especially the FPA-4.

Not really a lot of ALCO diesel body types to choose from but I like The RS3
It goes well on small layouts and pulling 5 to 8 car consisits with one engine is realistic
For diesel, I’ll throw in the high-nose C-628. I got to see and photograph a couple of these in Upper Michigan in 1986. I imagine today with SD-70’s and such they aren’t that impressive, but having lived for years on a line that only mostly four axle switchers on their trains, these engines seemed REALLY BIG in comparison!!
As for steam, its a NYO&W 4 -8 -2 and diesel would have to be any FA,but I think they look the best in L&NE colors
I forgot to mention ALCO steam, about half the ATLANTIC CENTRAL steam is from ALCO, but the favorite by far are the nine USRA design Heavy 4-8-2’s, which are used for both passenger and fast freight.

Definitely the RS-3. I am a diesel guy so any ALCo diesel is great though!
Anything by Alco , I am hard pressed to find one I like over another .

The RSD15 low nose “alligtors”. Very distinctive with the long low nose.
