I’ll go one further on dotorwayne’s motion for the DL&W maroon on gray and yellow and say the after-merger EL maroon on gray and yellow with the ‘E’ (actually EL, if you look close) in the diamond. I’ll also have to say the pre-merger Erie yellow on black, with the ‘ERIE’ in the diamond.
I agree, Tom…
The above Stewart Erie FT A-B I purchased earlier on before settling on the NYC. I really like the contrast of the yellow against the black, as well as the herald on the nose. Ultimately, I’d like to incorporate it into a future layout, where the Erie crossed the NYC.
Tom
Being the only ones I could almost justify running on my layout, I’ve got to go with this one.
Or maybe this one.
My layout is set in 1975. L&N had trackage rights over this section of the N&W Clinch Valley Line. I believe only one or two of the L&N F’s lasted that long. Some of the Clinchfield’s (partner of L&N) ran a little longer. Close enough if you like F’s (and I do).
Santa Fe warbonnets in all of their iterations; red bonnets; yellow bonnets and blue bonnets. They looked good on F units and modern power, as well.
NYC lightning stripes by far favorite. After that Boston and Maine Maroon/Gold and Maine Central Green/Gold.
NJT F7A (my Thanks to Intermountain).
While there was several F unit schemes I liked I gotta go with NYC’s black or gray Lightening Stripes scheme.
Some of the younger posters may not know about how two color schemes got popularized way back when (late '40s) and were impressed upon us kids of that time…
Lionel worked with builder EMD (may have been called EMC back then), the Santa Fe, and the New York Central to build Lionel’s new F units in those two color schemes. They even got the RRs to pony up some for the cost of the dies!
And pretty much everyone soon saw these locos - either in their basement, stores, many tv shows, magazine and later on tv ads.
Their popularity soared (more so the colorful ATSF), and many versions of those F units were produced over the next 15 years or so.

Hello all,
For me it’s gotta be the Royal Gorge Route Railroad F units. I’m a sucker for those F-B units too!
Hope this helps.
So this isn’t a Stewart v. Genesis thing?
(So why isn’t it on Trains?) (heh!)
I wanted those Lionel Santa Fe Fs in the worst way as a kid. Now that I can afford them, not so much. Besides, I have HO versions galore.
My favorite F units are the F3/F7 Genesis models from Athearn.

- This paint scheme is pretty rad by the way! When my friend saw those colors, his response was "okay that red is AWESOME!

There are several beautiful paint schemes but nothing quite does it properly like the Western Pacific silver and orange. It is beyond the reach of others… In my opinion.

BAR Grey & Blue
I agree. That is a very good looking color scheme.

Rich,

The colours are good, but the layout of them looks incomplete, to my eye, at least.
Wayne
Wayne, are your trying to raise the BAR? [(-D]
