Since we’ve got a thread about our favorite F Unit paint schemes, how about one for Geeps? Personally, I;ve always thought the early geeps (7s, 9s, 18s and 20s) had some character to them. Favrotie Paint schemes fro me are CNJ Green and Gold stripes, LV Cornerl Red, EL, Southern Tuxedo. They tended to look best in busier pain schemes, at least to my eye anyway.
SCL GP 7’s and anything CRR.
This is another very subjective one. For the most part, I tend to prefer Geeps with understated paint schemes. B&O’s original blue & gold freight scheme was nice, especially when it was clean, but it seemed like they overdid it when they put the fancier passenger scheme on some units. That passenger scheme looked fine on cab units, but it seemed to me to be out of place on GP’s, just as the plain blue looked out of place on F’s. Erie’s black and gold with wings on the ends seemed not to be overdone, in keeping with the GP’s utilitarian look. The emblem on the flanks was a nice alternative to the full road name more common on other roads. Offhand, the only fancy Geep schemes I can think of that really appeal to me are the original Wabash and MoPac schemes. Southern wasn’t bad either.
Once again, there is no wrong answer.
Tom.
While certainly not the most colorful, I’ve always been partial to the older ATSF silver/black zebra striped Geeps. Of course some say they are white/black, but that’s ok too.
Cool thread!
it’s a bit of a double irony in my case.
1. My favorite “Geep” was produced in 1977, which is beyond my 1965-73 modeling era. I really like the high-nosed Southern GP40X’s in the “Tuxedo” paint cheme. The boxy body lines combined with the flared radiators made these units really stand out.

The Athearn HO RTR versions pop up on ebay from time to time, so I hope to snag one there eventually. It would be a nice complement to my Athearn Southern “Tuxedo” high-nosed SD45.
2. The second “irony” is that I primarily model the Seaboard Coast Line (and ACL) which was one of Southern’s competitive rivals!
This is one of those “I’m getting it because I like how it looks” scenarios. [8D]
Although the ATSF zebra scheme is okay, it’s not the best.
The best one is the Santa Fe blue and yellow in 1960-1972.
Favorite GP geeps are in my eye are.
Southern Pacific black widow, BO simplied scheme, Chessie System.
I haven’t seena Geep I din’t like, but the GP-15 is one of my favorites.

-
Wabash Geeps
-
CB&Q Chinese red Geeps
-
N&W 13-Dip all-black Geeps (particularly the high nose GP30’s!)
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
My favorite Geeps are GP9/18/35/38/38-2 and 40/40-2.
Color schemes is NYC simple scheme with herald and number on the cab.
SCL Black with yellow stripes.
N&W Hamburger and “NW” scheme.
C&O with C&O on the hood and the solid blue scheme with Chesapeake & Ohio on the hood.
CB&Q black scheme with “Every Where West” on the hood.
SP Black Widow scheme.
Milwaukee Geeps are my favorites.
My first HO train was a Milwaukee Geep, back in the very early 1960s. It a gutted dummy now, but still runs as an “honorary engine” now with a sound decoder. These are Protos.
My childhood railfanning days were pretty much limited to the Cleveland, Ohio area. As such in the late 1960s there was not much color to be seen unless you like black. E-L maroon, yellow and gray was a pleasant relief, though.
Then one day a pair of THESE arrived:

Wow, I was hooked! Turns out the PRR would lease these BAR geeps during the summer for ore and coal movements. I’d still like to get a pair of the Genesis models to refresh my memory…
Regards, Ed
My two favorites are:
-
ATSF Black/White “Zebra Scheme” (1950’s)
-
ATSF Blue/Yellow “Yellowbonnet” (1970’s)
I’ve always liked the pretty much out-of-the-spotlight early Rio Grande Geeps, which bear several dignified paint schemes. The ones I like best of all are the stylish GP30 group. P2K put out great versions, much improved over what came before and I bought them all. Time has moved on and they’re no longer top shelf, but I’m still happy with mine.
P2K supplied them with a fair stab at decent nose lighting, an oscillating signal light (Mars or Pyle), but left out the actual electrons - no light emitted. I overcame my reluctance to take a hack saw anywhere near them and did the surgery need to install proper photon-enabled lighting.
To me a Geep is only the GP7 and GP9 models.
my votes:
CB&Q red, CB&Q black, and Great Northern’s original orange Empire Builder colors.
GP7 and GP9 in early CNR livery. Just like the ones I was watching as a kid.
Guy same here except the ones I watched were Grand Trunk Western with the occasional Central Vermont for variety.
I grew up next to an Illinois Central branchline so the IC green diamond geeps and the orange and white Paducah rebuilds have always been favorites of mine. Although my favorite geep of all times is the GP38-2 in just about any paint.

I’m partial to the GP38-2 and GP40s. As someone who likes the modern era, I watched a lot of Union Pacific role through town as I sat in my high school classes. I also like the high nose Norfolk Southern geeps. Still something about a Burlington Northern geep, though, too.
CNJ’s 1950’s paint scheme has always been my favorite.
I’m waiting for Atlas and/or Athearn to do such an “as delivered” GP7.
Imagine most are just choosing their fav RR and a geep they used so formulatic.
I would like to see Athearn Genesis offer GP30’s with prototype specific details - such as the D&RGW GP30 with correct low nose headlight.
