What is your favorite locomotive, Steam of Diesel, and why. I would have to say mine would either be the SD40-2 or the SD70MAC. I like the SD40-2 because of the “looks” and I like the Sd70MAC because it’s the engine I see the most. So what’s your favorote loco??
My Atlas GP40
I’m going to have to say either the NYC Hudsons (non streamlined), or the PRR K-4s
My NWSL vertical boiler brass Shay. Peter Smith, Memphis.
dekruif,
You mentioned favorite prototypes. Others have included favorite model. Which “favorite” is your inquiry referring to?
Tom
The SD40-2 in Southern paint is my favorite locomotive of all time. The SD70M comes in a close second.
My favorite loco for now is my Proto GP38-2’s on ONR colours.
My favorite locomotives remains the GP7/9 with the GP38/GP38-2 a very close second.
My favorite model Geeps is Athearns GP38-2 and GP40-2.[:D]
an EMD BL1 ro BL2, i love those things, a Geep/ F3 mix
I have to agree with Dan on the NYC non-streamlined Hudsons. They just LOOK like a steam engine should look. But I am also partial to Alco road switchers (RS-1, RS-2, & RS-3). They just LOOK like diesel road switchers should look - and they’re very versatile!
So, by modeling NYC transition era, I get the best of both worlds! You CAN have it all! [:D]
Prototypes: GE: C40-8 in CNW EMD: SD40-2 or SD45 in anything
Models: C40-8 in CNW, SD70M in NS or an SD40-2 in anything
Tom’s(Tstage) point is an interesting one–in my case they’re the same answer: E8, both my model I bought off ebay and the Frisco passenger train pulled by them that I rode in the 1960’s.
Jim
Alco switchers.
CN GP40-2 with the CN crew cab, any SD40-2.
It seems like my favorite loco is always the next one on my work bench!
I am partial to Alco diesels, big steam, and first & second generation EMD’s. Gotta love those Baldwins and F-M’s, too! Anything that pulls iron ore, Santa Fe’s “Dress Blues”…
Sorry, but I can’t narrow it down much further than that!

Model: P2K Heritage Pere Marquette 2-8-4 Berksire and Kato Conrail SD80MACs

I guess that would be the FT. It changed railroading as it was the first major road diesel. Good lookin’, too. [8D]
FT
P.S. Here’s a picture

My favorite is a Proto 2000, 2-8-8-2 Mallet. It just has a tough look.

I prefer the steam era. Sue
