How can I choose? I’ve always been fascinated by Mallets, yet the first real steamer I ever saw was B&O’s docksider when I was a kid in Baltimore. PRR’s GG-1 flew past a playground just a couple of blocks from my home, and streetcars and trackless trolley buses still ran into the early sixties. And then, of course, there was the Lionel F-3 (in all those roadnames in the fifties). I’m sorry, I just can’t do it! I really do “love them all”.

I really do love them all! Anything that runs on rails I’m a fan of! I do, however like steam a bit better than the others. First generation diesels and early electrics would come in a close second.

I still love the old sd40-2’s. I have fond memories of being put in the hole for hours while waiting for opposing traffic to clear and eating lunch on those spacious porches. I always wondered why EMD made them that way but I’m glad they did. The steam era was over by the time I came along so I never really developed a great appreciation for them.

i love the motion of the steamers…they have such weight and a feel of history

Diesel.

How can you beat steam? Steam engines just have character (the sound, the smoke); diesels seem to bland to me. Although I do enjoy electric engines. The larger the engine the better.

I like steam, because they where not running on the rails when I was growing up.

I love Steam, & Electric locos, and my wife loves Electric, especially the GG-1, & some Diesels are OK. Also MY Father & Her Father worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. We also share the Love for O-Gage Trains. Ray Eichert

The N & W Class J has everything you want in an engine. Good looks and built for running! The EMD “E” and “F” units run a close second, what great looking engines. The railroads did a great job on those early paint schemes.

All NYC and Sub’s steamers.

I love Steam beacuse I used to watch and enjoy the New York (Empire) State Express (Hudson) when it came to the Syracuse station. I got to ride in the engine for about 30 Feet (maybe more), but being only 8, I can remember it. I walked with the oiler who checked/filled the journals and shoveled coal. What an engine. You do NOT see these day unless you goto a train museum. Also, had a chance to see the “Big-boy” on steam. Massive…

My criteria:
#1. It runs
#2. I can afford it.
In real life STEAM.

I love them all!! [banghead]

I love 'em all, but GG-1 rules![2c]

If it has a whistle instead of a horn, I like it better! I like steam first, both in model railroad life and in real life, but am starting to appreciate diesel more as time goes by. I particularly like streamline looks and am fond of early streamliner diesel, especially Santa Fe warbonnets, MoPac Eagles, Olypian Hiawathas, and Rock Island Line Rockets.

I, too like SD40’s, as there is something about their blocky lines that work for aesthetic appeal, especially in old SP livery or UP livery.

The Lionel #675 is my favorite for its smooth running and stubby looks. It was my childhood engine and therefore is nostalgic. I must admit that it is a pain to disassemble. But it will always be number one in my book.

my favorite is the triplex
