My favorite locomotive is the one that I get from the roundhouse in running condition, with all parts correctly in place, with a good ruinning diesel engine, problem free traction motors and main generator and auxilliary generator, recently cleaned toilet facilities, working lights and radio, safe comfortable seats, a good AAR control stand, working A/C, good fitting doors and windows and round wheels and that pulls my train all day without issue, complaints or breaking down.
It’s gotta be the Alaska Railroads GP-49’s. These babies could pull anything they put behind them, They had lower gearing, stubby powerful looks, operated in the coldest rairloading places in America and had a plow that only EMD could love.
Right behind that would be Heber Valley ex;UP 618. She rides well, works hard, and is easy to steam. She only gave me grief one time on the climb out of Provo Canyon when some kids had covered the track with weeds. Nearly sucked the fire right off the grates and out the stack, but we recovered. She did me well.
How about the ARR GP40-2s? Have most of the goodies of the GP49s, and look pretty sharp in the new paint scheme.
The inside is pretty nice, too, after repainting.
Looks like the GP49s got returned, but the GP40-2s are still at work.
