WHAT WOULD YOUR FAVORITE MODEL LOCO IN HO SCALE OF ALL TIME.
I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT THE OLD ATHEARN E7 IS MINE. FOR THE COST OF IT YOU CAN’T BEAT IT. I KNOW THAT IT IS NOT DETAIL FOR MOST MODEL TRAIN FANS. BUT I JUST LOVE THEM.
My Atlas Master Series GP38 is the Thoroughbred of my layout.
Kato SD40 or SD45 or GP35. Atlas GP38/40 next.
My Atlas CB&Q S2 is my favorite. It was part of my starter set. I have better detailed, better running more expensive locomotives now, but have great affection for my first! Kind of like girlfriends! But not my first wife[}:)]
That’s a hard question for me to answer now.
I have too many favourites including the Proto 1000 D&H RS11 I just bought.

Definatley have to be KATO’s SD80MAC in conrail paint
my Kato U.P. AC44CTE’s!!
I agree, the old Athearn F7 is a nice loco. I have the Lehigh Valley Special Edition examples - 1 power, 1 dummy A units. The powered one will haul amazing loads and is very quiet. I fitted the Walthers “Diesel Dress-up Kit” which adds handrails and glazing, and also removed the lightbulb.
At the moment, my favourite would have to be my Bachmann Norfolk-Southern GP50 - Bachmann offer the only reasonably priced high-nose GP50 in HO that I know of - half the price of Athearn BB locos, and a better runner - it’s as quiet as my Proto 1k locos and runs as smoothly as they do - flywheels would be a nice addition, though it runs very nicely without them.
I agree that the Athearn F-7 is hard to beat. My favorite though is my LL P2K GP-7 in ATSF plain blue billboard scheme. I got it on sale at Trainworld for $29.99, add $20 for a decoder and at $50 I have a loco thats hard to beat in looks and performance too.
[:D]The Norfolk & Western Class J is my Favorite!![:D]
Four engines, my K4, my Conrail SD70, and my NS/CR patch SD40-2 and GP40-2’s.
My bachmann 2-8-0, with sound. It looks and runs great [for a steamer]
I like my LLP2K NS GP60 best followed by my LLP2K CSX SD60M and Kato Conrail SD80MAC. Those new Kato AC4400CW’s are pretty sharp too[:D]
In HO it is the Bowser K4 Pacific - first kit locomotive I built.
Enjoy
Paul
At this point I’d have to say my two favorites are my Spectrum 2-8-0’s and my BLI heavy mikes.
Have Fun,
Tom Watkins
Diesel: P2K E7 - mine’s in Maine Central Pine Green / Gold stripes - fantastic and it didn’t break the bank either!! The Atlas Master GP38 is a close second though.
Steam: I’ll go with the Spectrum 2-8-0 as well. Good runner, easy to detail / kitbash and not very expensive.
I have an Atlas Alco C-425 that pulled so well I named it Butkus and numbered it 51. It has never let me down when it was needed to grind out the miles, so it has become my fav.
I think that the best locomotive - bar none - is the Proto Santa Fe 2-8-8-2. I liked it so well that I went out and bought the other number. I’ve installed a soundtraxx challenger decoder in both and they are nice. Second place would be my new BLI Santa Fe 4-8-4.
Why would anyone want a deisel with no monkey motion? They are so plain going down the track.
Have a good day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY
Bob
P2K GP9 in heavily weathered UP colors.
Tom
My favorite plastic locomotive would be my Kato SD-90/43MAC.
