Favorite New England Railroad

To start this I’m voting for a line I regret missing: Rutland.[;)] With such a nice setting, an all Alco diesel roster, steam that was left looking as it had from day one, even if it was 40+ years old, how could one go wrong?

Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington Railway is my favorite. I love the little engines and the waterfront.

Why does everybody love New England roads? The best are west of Chicago.

That’s a common misconception. The ones that get the spotlight are west of Chicago. The spotlight commonly mis-marks whats really not the best - the roads west of Chicago are a meager attempt at what railroads and service should be - and they were lucky to be the only railroads around with even more meager competition and no highway interstates.

The best were in the East. High on the best list is the New Haven.

A large varied roster, First Class passenger service from commuters, to overnighters, some of the best food in the diners and grills, on-time preformance, busy corridors with dozens of freight and passenger trains an hour, traffic managed with precision, and pride among employees.

The SF, UP, and SP couldn’t reach up and touch the NH with a ten foot pole… Size means zip.
