February 4th X-ing collision in Utah?

I’ve seen videos of the grade crossing incident, not really sure what to make of it other than the Frontrunner was not at fault - grade crossing signals appeared to be working correctly - at least until the collision. The view from the fixed camera suggests that the crossover driver was having problems stopping (going to fast) prior to being rear ended by the pick-up truck.

The one good aspect of the collision was that no one was seriously injured or killed.

The driver had an easy out, just continue driving forward. The gates don’t appear to be four quandrant, so there was nothing blocking their escape.

Add to that the “impenetrable” gates, which the driver could have easily pushed through backing up. They are made to swing away.

Totally on the driver, although the pick up that pushed them onto the crossing gets an “assist” on that one.

I think I’d give a bit of slack to the crossover driver who was probably very rattled when hit from behind hard enough to launch his car a few feet. In California at least, there are very few exceptions to the rule of a driver rear ending another car is automatically held at fault. This does not appear to be such an exception.

It will be interesting to see what the police reports and insurance investigations have to say.
