While on the east coast of Florida last week, I noticed almost all Florida East Coast Freight trains with a cut of what looked to be two-bay, open top, low slung hopper cars. They reminded me of ore-jennys. What are these cars? What do they carry–and from where to where?
They are probably carrying gravel, for the construction industry or for ballast. I do not remember if FEC serves any of the phosphate mines in central FL or not, so I do not know if they are carrying any of this.

Funny you should mention that. Here in my part of the country, Wisconsin & Southern replaced their ore-jennys with some of that same type of car!
Yeah, FEC hauls rock, and quite a bit of it too! Their name pretty much says it all – Florida East Coast – so they don’t go anywhere in central Florida.
