Federal Transit Administration proposes ‘State of Good Repair’ rule
You need a rule for this? Really?
I wish it would apply to private freight carriers, my former RR had disgusting locomotives always breaking down
The government thinks it is enlightening these agencies with a new concept of “achieving and maintaining a state of good repair.” Wow.
Why should this be a surprise. When you don’t have a real mission, go invent one. For some one else to do. And because fares won’t go up to cover the cost of yet more administratium, all will be paid for by the taxpayer.
As if there’s not enough government regulating (meddling) here comes another one, unfunded of course. Railroads don’t defer maintenance to invite mechanical break-downs, but there’s not enough money to bring all rolling stock up to “good repair” simultaneously, especially with the drain on funding caused by a headlong rush for PTC. We already know the government can’t adhere to a budget, why do they insist businesses become just as fiscally irresponsible?
Actually this isn’t as dumb as it sounds!
Many transit agencies have a tendency to let their assets run down and not maintain them because it’s easier to just ask the feds (and states and local governments) to buy them new assets rather than keep their existing assets in good repair.
In other words, take care of what you got.
Could save us taxpayers a lot of money!
