I found out this past week that the majority of my relatives feel that my model railroading hobby is too expensive and takes up too much of my time that could be better spent doing something more constructive…
Oh well. What can I say. Different strokes for different folks. Glad I don’t think like them ([;)]).
It’s a great pity your relatives can’t find themselves something more constructive to do!!
Much of the trouble in the world is caused by half the world minding the other half’s affairs, instead of minding their own business. Carry on pal, and remind them what may happen to turkeys very shortly - They can get stuffed !! (UK expression - translation provided on request)
I feel your pain. I am in a similar situation. While most of my family builds models and they do not have any kind of problem what so ever with me building models of railroad cars, locomotives, or even buildings. But they do not want any part of turning my railroad models, into anything resembling a viable model railraod. They cast me out to the garage with a 4X6 and as soon as it was not conveniently out of the way for them, Tere it down they made me do. [][:(!][:(!][][:(][banghead]
I have more than one hobby when it comes to myself, I guess I am lucky that my wife and girls think its great that I do other things in the evenings beside watch the TV.
at the next family function just run around screeming Choo choo,… choo choo,… and go absolutly nuts, Then if they tell you to settle down, start running around like a monkey and scream and stuff and then pick imaginary bugs out of there hair and groome them… then you can talk to your self while you eat and say open wide for the choo choo! Then they will all ask… “” whats wrong with you?“”
Politely say What ever do you mean?
They’ll say something alog the lines of,… “your crazy” or some thing! Then break down and start crying and point to your spouse and say, He/She Took the trains! There gone all gone! and totaly start going crazy again…
What does this accomplish?.. well hopfully they’ll say shame on you (to your spouse) for taking the trains from you! GIVE HIM/HER THE TRAINS BACK…
and then say no no That wouldn’t be productive! In fact were not being productive,… were all sitting around doing nothing, up people UP! get to work! You know what im getting at!!!
It’ll be funny if not any thing else… Just Flip out!
thats Probably what I’d really do If I had my trains taken from me!
Throw a total Tempor tantrum!
Oh boy Thats rough, I hope you explain that if you did’nt have trains then your wife would probably need to be institutionalized!
Ask them if gambling, drinking or carousing would be better ways to spend your time and money. Lots of families would give anything to have someone who is home with a hobby. They will come around eventually.
More likely is that you’ll end up being Tazered by the cops your family has called, then having a bottle of Prozac shoved up your [:0] while your viens are pumped full of sedatives by the EMT’s while they carry you off to the nearest Hospital for obsevation…[;)]
“We always thought he was a nut, Officer” [:0][:p][;)][:o)]
I also feel your pain. It’s bad enough that others make comments but when it’s your wife it really hurts. My first wife before she died was very supportive of all my hobbies and was looking forward to my eventual retirement to enjoy watching/helping me work on my various hobby activities. Second wife was different. Right after we were married, she told me my hobbies were for children and THEY HAD TO GO!![}:)] I was told to loose them or SHE WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT HERSELF!![}:)][}:)] One day when she was out I put all of my stuff in the overhead out of sight.
Well, as you might guess the marrige did not last but 2 years. She blew a gasket in the lawyers office when he found out I still had kept my stuff and it had a value of over $10,000. She said if she had any idea that it actually had a value SHE WOULD HAVE SOLD IT SELF AND KEPT THE MONEY.
I tell anyone who thinks my hobbies are a waist of time and money to stuff it! It’s my life and my money. I’m a well balanced person and spread my time across a wide area of interest and people. I think most who say something negative just wi***hey could exercise an interest of their own and feel they can’t.
To each his/her own. In return, I don’t intimate to them how much their low opinion of my hobby occupies my thoughts. I figure the less they understand about me, the more I like 'em.
My parents are supportive of the hobby, but think I spend too much time on it. They want me to have more programs, and so do I, but not at the expense of my RR time.
I actually got my father really hyped about the rebuild plans for the 4x8.
This hobby teaches us so many lifelong skills.
I empathize with those looked down upon and humiliated for their love of trains.
O’ and at least were waisting our money on something fun and interesting, instead of dirty magazines and bars, and possibly drugs, like alot of men are doing now a days!!! JERRY JERRY JERRY!!! lol
