Fellow Buckeyes

Good day everyone, it looks like I am going to be headed to Ohio next week to visit some family that lives in Dayton. I was hoping that there might be some people that know the area better than I do as to where the hot spots are. It has been about 4 years since I have been that way, and that was before I was really into trains.

Right now I am trying to find places that are only an hour or so from Dayton (and preferably not Cincinnati), but it looks like there might not be that much out there, I just hope that I am wrong. Plus, if anyone knows of any current or former train stations in the area, I would love to know.

Finally, if there is anyone in the area and want to hook up for a couple of hours, that would be great, I am going to be in Dayton July 19-22, just let me know.

P.S. I know the title is Fellow Buckeyes, but I can say that since I was actually born up in the Akron area, I have just been transplanted here in Colorado for the past 20 years, I still have a lot of Ohio at heart!![;)][:D]

Make sure you visit the former Dayton Union Railway truss bridge on the west side of downtown Dayton. This is now owned by CSX and NS and the Indiana and Ohio run over it as well. NS has the former NYC Cincinnati line and CSX has the B&O Cincinnati to Toledo line.

Yeah! What’s wrong with Cincinnati. They got pigs that don’t make a mess and don’t fly!!!

Sidney would be the place for you.its where csxs marion line crosses the toledo/dayton sub.but what is wrong with Cincinnati? a trip to CUT(cincinnati union terminal) is worth a stop.I’ll be in Celina on saturday.I’ll try to get the gators out of Grand Lake.
stay safe

Don’t get me wrong, I love Cinci, almost went to school there (why I went to Boulder I will never know). I am just not a big on 'fanning in big cities (not a big fan of watching trains in Denver either, but it is still a great city!) And one of the things that I am looking forward to the most on the trip is getting some Skyline Chili, sure wish I could get that out here.

Sidney sounds like the place to be, I will definitely check that out. I would like to get down to Cincinnati at get some pictures of the station there, I have always heard of it (even in my architecture history classes) and would love to visit. And if I can get a chance I will check out the Dayton truss bridge too.

Either way I will be printing out the topic here and taking it with me, I will try to get to all of the places that I can. Thanks for the help, even if I am gator food[;)]

If in Sidney, seek out the Big Four (CCC&StL) depot at the crossing. Impressive.

Do you know how many bearings are on them things!!?

For your pennace, you have to bring back to the Depot Diner & Coffee Shop the following:

(1) Skyline Chili (or we’ll settle for Uncle Steve’s or Gold Star Chili, who was here in Denver on Arapahoe Road & I-25 until 18 months ago)
(2) Graeters Ice Cream
(3) UDF Milk Shakes for all
(4) Kahn’s Big Red Smokies (for Joe)
(5) Frisch’s anything
(6) Montgomery Ribs (from the boathouse), and
(7) Izzy Kadetz’s Kosher Gorrilla (pickle and all)
(8) Marzetti’s Restaurant anything…(Dayton)

That seems fair and do-able. I remember driving up here from the Springs to get Gold Star there on Arapahoe, true it is no Skyline, but it always worked in a pinch. And really I am sad to see it go, since I now work about 2 blocks from where it was. Oh well.

Since railfans often go for other types of public transportation, I feel obliged to mention that Dayton still has a couple of trolleybus lines extant. They leave from downtown.
