Fences around a rail yard

I have a place on my HO layout that I think needs a fence of some kind along the tracks in a yard. What type of fence would that be? I was wondering about a chain link or would they have used something more like a field fence or simply barbed wire?. I am modeking in the mid to late 70"s Mike

I use chain link around the railyard and certain spurs, also use them around factories. Only time I used other than chainlink is around fields and houses.

Mike,

Is it an industrial area? Chain link. You could also use a wood stockade type fence.

Is it a more “civilized” area? You might want a more decorative wrought iron type fence.

The type I’ve seen most commonly used is chainlink.

The Portland & Western’s Albany Yard (Albany, Oregon) only has fencing in certain places. The bigget reason they cant fence the west side of the yard is the Amtrak station! the only way around that is a fence between the main and the yard, which would look tacky…

I’ve been thinking about making a chainlink fence fron screen wire cut on a diagonal. Would this work? What do you use?

I used for my chain link fence the wedding vail stuff you can buy at a crafts store, it comes in silver and easy to manage, it’s about $3.00 a yard when I bought it. i made my posts out of evergreen styrene, looks good.

I have done that at the results were very passable. The difficulty is getting the posts and top rail to look right. I used some small metal tubing and attached everything together with some kind of adhesive although that was a long time ago so I can’t remember exactly what I used. It was on my old layout which was is now gone so I can’t show you pictures. For a little added expense, they make kits that might give an even better look.

I also have used the wedding veil material, works great and looks good, strands are smaller than screen wire giving them a much better look. Like willy6 said it’s only like $3:00 a yard and that makes more fence than you could ever use.

Thanks for all the replies, I will go with the chain link. I have made some of it befor using a stuff called TULLA (about the same stuff as bridal vail) I got from Wally World for $1.00 a yard, and for the post I used wire bent at about a 45 deg. angle for the barbed wire which I simply use thread. I will post some pics later. Thanks again for the help. Mike
