Note the vertical “fenders” at the front of the locomotive. What were these called, and what was their purpose?
Some, particularly those that were extended higher, were called “elephant ears.” Their purpose was to lift the smoke above the engine high enough so that it di dnot obscure the enginemen’s vision.
