Feromex

Does anyone know if the Ferromex engines will come through on the Union Pacific Geneva Sub line on a Saturday or Sunday? I ask because those are my railfanning days…

Thanks.

Speaking of Ferromex, what is their reputation as a major railroad? Respectable or not? I was just curious, because it seems like public transportation, such as airlines and railroads, in 2d/3d world countries are run a bit shady.

From what I understand, Uncle Pete has a 26% ownership stake in Ferromex, so I don’t think they can be THAT bad.

The railroad system in Mexico (old NdeM, later FNM) was split up and privatized back in the 90’s. The three biggest parts are Ferromex, KCSdeM (Kansas City Southern of Mexico, previously TFM), and Ferrosur.

As noted, UP has a significant, but minority, stake in Ferromex (FXE). Ferromex has the largest system, in route miles, of the three major Mexican railroads.

KCS was able to buy out it’s Mexican partner and is now the 100% owner of KCSdeM. While not as big as Ferromex, they have busier routes.

FXE and KCSdeM qualify as Class 1’s on the basis of route miles and gross revenues.

Ferrosur is smaller that the other two, and classifies as a Class II. FXE is trying to take over Ferrosur, but the takeover attempt is being contested in the courts down here.

There was a good summary article on these roads in the November 2004 issue of Trains Magazine.

Cool!!! So, when will it come through again?

The Ferromex units I saw when wandering around with CopCarSS appeared to be brand-new units, being delivered from GE. The day he photographed the one that appeared with his thread, there were four of them, numbered consecutively. I would assume that they go out of Proviso on MPRPB, which usually departs in the morning. The following day one went west on that train.

I have no idea on which days new units would come in from GE, nor how long they’d stay at Proviso before heading west and hanging a left at Nelson. But that would be the train to watch for.

I see the MPRPB every Saturday morning. Some even comming back from Iowa. I have never seen those units before. I have seen TFM on the BNSF once, but we are not talking about that right now.
