Fertilizer explosion shuts down Union Pacific main line

Ennis sub is the old SP Houston main between Dallas and Houston, right? So that would make the line through West the old Katy, right?

It’s Hearne, the Crossroads of Texas.

WE ARE FROM THIS AREA. WE ARE 16 MILES FROM WEST.AND ONE MILE FROM UP TRACK. VERY ODD NOT TO HEAR TRAIN AIR HORNS FOR 3 DAYS. NO CROSSING GATES ACROSS ROADS AS TRAINS PASS. HAVING LIVED BY THE KATY, NOW UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD ALL MY LIFE, ITS HARD TO DESCRIBE. USUALLY ABOUT 24 TRAINS ADAY PASS …SINCE NO TRAINS TO DISRUPT M OF W CREWS, UP USED THE OPEN TIME FOR TRACK MAINTENANCE…UP HAS 2 LINES FROM SOUTH THAT MERGE AT BELLMEAD, THEN 1 MAIN TO FT. WORTH TX… ITS A SHAME THAT TRAINS ARE RIGHT NEXT DOOR, YET WH EN YOU MENTION NO TRAINS FOR 2 DAYS,THEY HAPPENED NOT TO EVEN NOTICED…

The picture I saw showed the east rail was blown off the ties and moved over next to the west rail. The ties stayed in place. Also a loaded grain hopper car was blown over that was on the siding. Sorry about the loss of life. These type plants are all over the midwest.

I’ve had the chance to visit this small Texas town and view the depot and caboose there. A lot of small mom-and-pop businesses were most hospitable there in this town of people with ancestry from Czechoslovakia.

I really appreciate these e-mail updates with the news of the week. They are both timely and informative and are a pleasant addition to the monthly magazine.

UNION PACIFIC DID GREAT JOB OF KEEPING THEIR FREIGHT MOVING. IF YOU LIVE CLOSE TO TRACKS OR TRACKS RUN THROUGH YOUR TOWN, YOU RECOGNIZE THE ABSENCE OF SILENCE…ONE ADVICE I ALWAYS ADHERE TO IS IF YOU HEAR A TRAIN==HAVE YOUR CAMERA READY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS HEADED YOUR WAY…
