Can anyone help me with installing Woodland Scenics field grass? I’ve glued in several clumps and they just don’t look right. Any tips?
I drill a small hole with a pin vise, stuff the ends of the field grass down into the hole with a pair of tweezers, and then apply a drop of white glue.
Field grass in HO scale would be microscopic in scale, probably best to use something that represents grass rather than trying to replicate actual grass, grass on some layouts would be up to your shoulders, that’s what throws the scale off.
If you have foam for a base, they make a tool to plant it with (Micro-Mark has one) or you can make your own by cutting the tip off a large eyed sewing needle, opening up the eye. Stick the point into a dowel for a handle (might drill a small hole to put it in). Put down a drop of glue and push the grass through the glue into the foam.
If you are on hardshell or plywood I’d say you need to drill and poke into the hole, put the glue over the hole first and it will be pulled into the hole as you push the grass in.
Good luck,
I use Lou Sassi’s method…grab a bunch of grass between your thumb and forefinger, cut off desired length, dip in Tacky Glue and place on layout. I usually give the top a tap to spread the grass out slightly.
No drilling or poking needed. But the field grass has a tendency to flyaway when you get near the end of a piece.
