filler for depressions on foam

after leaving something heavy on my foam base, there is a depression where i want to run some track. What can i use to fill in and level this depression?

i thought about foam in a can, but i think it would be messy and i certainly don’t need a full can at this time.

was thinking of mixing some sawdust with glue. I am using sanded homasote strips as a base for my track, so it doesn’t need to be perfectly flat

How big are your depressions? If you are using 1/2" homasote it should be able to bridge a significant ding in the foam. Sculptamold or homemade goop could be used for large depressions. I suppose if they are large enough, you could cut another piece of foam, attach it and sand it smooth. (Have a shop vac handy.)

Good luck,

Richard

Self-leveling concrete maybe, or just use dyed plaster of Paris. I would roughen the surface of the foam, maybe even paint it with wood glue or something, maybe acrylic caulk, and then pour the plaster/cement over it. Or, use fine sand mixed with glue. Sprinkle the sand carefully to match the surface, then wet, then glue.

Dry-wall taping,plaster???

I’ll second the drywall mud…

.It is water friendly, easy to work and dries hard. Sandable and can be reshaped by wetting. If the dent is deep it may crack when dry but the cracks can be filled in.

Bob

I go with the dry wall mud. It’s easy to work with, you can buy it with different “set” times, and can be used for many other projects, such as rocks, roads, etc.

Mike.

Premixed vinyl spackel. Water clean up and can be sanded. Foam safe. Works good for small fixes like you mention.

perhaps this is more of scenery/land-form question

i built on 1" beaded foam with the intent of creating depressions/carving out to make the surrounding scenery lower than the track to avoid the flatland syndrome. So i’d rather not level the depression, but just build it up under the trackwork, which i think would look more realistic. These are ~1/4" deep. Would probably make a nice small pond.

i thought about using plaster, but i think the thinner parts would easily crack in the future. I hadn’t thought about using sand. What is vinyl spackle?

i’m using 1/2 x 1/4" homasote strips under the trackwork as a base as well as to elevate the track above its surroundings, but it deflects some over even smaller depressions.

thanks

Just want to clarify. Don’t confuse Drywall joint compound with the setting types. Regular “mud” used by many is very soft and left untreated (painted/ sealed) will soften once wet. Durabond 45 and better working 90 min would be a better choice. Can be placed up to an inch thick and feather out w/o ever cracking . Bonds to practically anything. Not so much the case w/ joint compound.

If your “dents” are rather shallow and/ or confined to a small area, any of the premixed spackling plasters should work fine. No need to mix up a batch of the messy Durabond.

GREGE,

Which post,do you want advice on? This one? Or the one you just posted?

Cheers,
