Filling dips in spline roadbed.

Well I have just about finished about 75’ of spline roadbed and I am delighted with the results. (It was my first attempt at spline) There are a couple of dips I would like level out where I have double width spline for double tracks. My Question is should I fill the dips with latex caulk or drywall spackle or something else? I plan to use latex caulk to stick the track directly to the spline when ready. The biggest dip is about 1/16" deep. Thanks for all your help I would have never made it this far with such success without it.

I would use a wood putty that you spread on the low part, let it dry, sand it down and check it with a straight edge or level. I wouldn’t use latex caulk because you can’t sand it.

Anyting you can level off/meet grade and sand. Yes to plaster, ground goop, drywall mud, spackle, wood putty, crack filler…

Does latex caulk stick to all of the above?

Brent, I have not used it because I suspect it would not…so I can’t honestly answer you. These would all be dusty, and you would have to seal them, say with another hard surface glue or epoxy. I tell you what I would do: use carpenter’s glue, the yellow stuff, or else paint the surface of the putty/plaster twice to get some liquid-type penetration and sealing of the surface, and then caulk would probably work quite well.

For a sandable surface, seal it with something first, then use almost any glue money can buy. [:)]

If you want real durability, you can’t beat bondo. Yes, the car body repair epoxy, and yes it bonds great with porous surfaces like wood.

With a roughened surface, caulk should stick I think.
