I’ve recently started my first detailing project–adding grab irons, mu hoses, etc. to an F7 (N-scale). My question is this; I have removed the 2 horns that came with the model so that I could place a more prototype-like horn in a different location. What type of body filler/putty do most modelers prefer to use to fill in the holes that are left after removing the original horns?
Your better off filling the hole with styrene first. I always save small sprues just for this purpose. Whittle, sand or file them down to size, test fit, then glue in place. Trim off sand(like to use 320 to 400 wet or dry. Now you can use the filler if needed. I used to use Squardron Putty, but now I like to use automotive body putty- does a nicer job. Another trick used by many modelers is to disolve styrene pieces in a dab of Testors liquid cement and use the paste as a filler. I don’t like it because some of the surrounding area can be more affected.
