Just back from a vacation (Fredericksburg Tx) and logged on to my desktop… Found out that the good folks at Microsoft installed IE 11 for me. Whoopeee !!!
So I go to my usual sites and all is fine… UNTIL I try to get on this Forum. Nope, I can’t get in - and the “address not found” screen came up every time.
I tried several workarounds, going to the Kalmbach site and trying to get in from there, but no go.
I emailed fellow forumite “Richhotrain” last nite with my tale of woe, and this morning he advised going in to the tools section and adding the site to the list. Well, I did, and obviously it worked.
My hat is off to Richhotrain for his rescue of my sanity!
And as I could get into all my other sites, what is the deal with not being able to get into this one?
For what its worth, a casual/new user might have just given up…
[;)] It’s a test. To be a REAL model railroader you must be able to constantly find ways to overcome obstacles. If you can’t figure out how to work around the bugs you don’t deserve to be here.
When my laptop downloaded IE11 I could not use the forum properly. My problem was Compatibility View needing to be turned on for the site. In IE11 it’s found under Tools, not at the top next to the address bar.
I gave up trying to be a REAL model railroader years ago. Me thinks thats why there are a lot of “loan wolf” modelers! They just wanna have fun.
IE 11 must be just out cause I bought this refurb Dell 755 about a month ago and updated it with all the latest MS patches and updates. Thanks for the tip to avoid IE 11. I’m one of the nerds who doesn’t follow the crowd to Goodle Chrome or Firefox.
NEVER allow automatic updates. ALways set it to NOTIFY so you cna install updates on your terms. Also, they do like to play tricks, last month, IE11 appeared under the “Optional” updates so if you only installed “Critical” updated, you didn;t get it. They have since moved it to Critical, so unless you actually click to see what is getting installed, you get IE11. I always wait a while on initial browser releases (which is why I hate Chrome and ue it only for my GMail, it automatically updates without even telling you, let alone giving you any options) because there is always something not compatible with the newest browser.
I suddendly couldn`t access anything to do with cs.trains.com for almost 3 weeks, although my wife could access the site on her laptop from my router. Then suddendly I was able to access the site without having done anything to my knowledge to get the site back. I am still using IE7 and refuse to update eventhough I still get the update popup everytime I log onto IE.
I had the same problem for 2 weeks & didn’t even realize that microsoft had downloaded & installed IE-11 into my computer. Could not get on any cstrains site. Finally called customer service at MRR & the nice gal there explained to me what had likely happened & to go to compatibility view & add the cstrains sites.
I also then immediately went to my live updates preferences & they were set to automatically download & install ALL updates. Changed that to notify me only & in a hurry. Just got this new computer in September with IE-10 & had completely spaced out setting my update preferences to “notify me only”, like I always had on my old machine.
