What many consider perhaps the best train oriented movie ever made (Nah, “The General” is…) with Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine as the sadistic conductor Shack!!!
There are many interesting things about “Emperor of the North”. For one thing, no one has a real name. “Shack” is a railroad term for a conductor for example. The engineer is just called “the Hoghead” and the fireman “the Black” (which has nothing to do with his being African-American, that was a nickname for a fireman). The hoboes all use their monickers of course.
BTW “A-No.-1” (Lee Marvin’s character) was a real person, a hobo in the late nineteenth - early twentieth century who wrote several books about his adventures on the road. I think “Emperor of the North Pole” was one of his stories.
