My son received an 8902 loco for free. The motor will turn out of the loco, but never while installed. It just sits and buzzes. As far as I can tell, this loco has no e-unit. Is the can motor bad? If so, what is the part number so I can get a new one? Or, does anyone have any tips on troubleshooting this problem?

Hi Stax! Your son’s 8902 will only work with DC Power, not AC. This is why it will sit on the track & buzz. The Motor is not bad but will be if you continue to use AC. What you need is an H.O. DC Power Transformer to operate the 8902 & you will be all set. Take Care.

You say that the “…motor will turn out of the loco…”. Do you mean simply that you can rotate the motor’s shaft? Or do you mean that it runs when you connect it to a voltage source? If so, and if it puts out enough current at a high enough voltage, you could run the locomotive from whatever DC supply you used to test the motor.
If you don’t have a suitable supply to run the locomotive, you probably have room inside to convert it to one-direction AC operation cheaply and easily by installing a bridge rectifier, like this one: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062580 . Connect the + and - terminals to the motor. Connect the ~ terminals where the motor terminals used to be connected. If it runs the wrong way, swap the motor wires.
With a little more fuss, you may be able to install an e-unit, electromechanical or electronic.
O.K. Your answer reinforces the “measure twice and cut once” adage. Convinced before I posted my question that the motor was just bad, we had taken it out, heated up the shaft to remove the gear, and by so doing, rendered the motor useless. If we had “measured twice” (by posting the question first) we would have saved ourselves some heartache. Now that the motor no longer functions, where can I get a new one? One of the other posts suggested Jeff at the train tender. Is that a good source for this kind of part and does this motor have its own part number? Will it come complete with the drive gear, or is that a separate part?
