Finding a plan

That’s twice I have gone to write a thread and it jumps and posts before I have a chance to put in any text. Anybody got any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Back to my original question>

In the “Workshop Tips” that came with MRP 2010 it talks about Paul Dolkos’ Woodsriver Yard. It sounds interesting and may be similar to what I am thinking of for a small yard on my layout in planning. There is no track plan shown. A search to the right, a search of Index of Mags and a search of Track Plans available to MR subscribers all came up empty. Does anyone know if this plan is published anywhere?

Now let’s see if I can get this posted without further incident.

Thank you,

The Boston and Maine’s New Hampshire Division - December 1995 MR

Working the Mill Job - April 2000 MR

Thanks for the information. MR collection doesn’t go back to '95, so will have to see if I can find one at the show coming up next month. Went to a show Sat, but didn’t know what I needed at that point. Have the Apr 2000, but they only show one yard, which appears to be the other end. It does say that the full layout is shown in the Dec 05 issue.

Thanks again,

Here is an approximation of the track plan for Woodsriver yard, drawn from the pictures pages 30-35 of the “Freight Yards” issue of MRs “How to Build Realistic Layouts”:

Main challenge with this yard is reach to the industry track at the rear. Paul Dolkos is a fairly tall man. But he noted in his article on his new Baltimore harbor layout in MRP 2010 that they often had run Woodsriver yard without attempting to switch the industries along the back.

I guess they didn’t need any engine escape tracks, since trains can always be backed into the A/D tracks, and driven out of the yard, using the wye.

Also, this is the kind of yard that would work pretty well on a peninsula coming off a corner sticking into a room.

I would have located the engine-service facilities alongside the wye so the industrial track could be moved closer to the aisle.

Stein: Thanks for the sketch, makes the plan easier to see than looking at partial photos. I’m thinking the A/D tracks are through tracks and the classification tracks could be either.

Mark: Moving the servicing area would definitely make “the reach” easier, if you can’t get in from the back.

Thanks again,

Not sure what you mean by the last sentence above. You can get an impression of the yard in this photo of a layout map from a layout visit someone had made to the B&M layout:

Ah - now I understand what you were trying to say. By “through track” you mean that there is a crossover between the two A/D tracks, allowing an engine to escape from one of the A/D tracks (the lowermost), if necessary. Yep.

Btw - you can also see on the diagram above that the engine service tracks is mostly nestled into the area Mark pointed out - my drawing wasn’t completely accurate in that respect.
