Finding prototype locomotive measurements

Hi all. I’ve looked everywhere to find a website that lists all the popular US. locomotive models with measurements, prototype info, ect. So far, nothing. Does anyone know of any websites as such? Looking more for the measurements of the locomotives, but any information is helpful. [:)]

Thanks everyone!

Cheers

Andy: Start here on R. Craig Rutherford’s Diesel Shop website: http://www.thedieselshop.us/ Click on builders, then production totals and then on the individual models to bring up the data.

Since you didn’t specify, are you talking about diesel, steam or both?

If you’re referring to steam, be aware that there were literally thousands of designs, ranging from one-off experiments to models produced in the hundreds. Many of them, and all the documentation pertaining to them, passed into oblivion long before there was a preservation movement to care about them.

Linn Westcott’s Steam Locomotives contains a representative sample - but nowhere near all - of American steam locos. Your local public library may have, or be able to get, a copy.

I’ve had sucess at my local library, they actually had a full blueprint for a McKeen motor car and a copy of the operating manual! If is for a particular road, try the various historical organizations for that road. During the twenties the Southern Pacific published erection manuals for most classes of power that contained complete line drawings( so called red books), these were never intended for public consumption and thus are very rare but out there for the price, trust me, my copy cost more then my monthly mortage[:O]. I have yet to locate the companion volume covering tender classes. Modeling in a minority scale does present challenges [sigh]
