Finding steam engines for the Reading

It’s tough to find anyone making steam engines for the Reading Lines. I have seen two older ones made by Lionel, and their recent 0-6-0 dockside switcher. And, I have seen one or two by MTH. But I have not seen any by the “other guys” out there. Williams makes one, a Berkshire, but for some reason, they have the darn thing painted green. http://www.williamstrains.com/Berkshire/BERK_rdg_model.gif

Reading never ran a steam engine painted green. Ever. What’s up with Williams that they have all their steam engines painted colors that never ran?

Anyone know what’s up with the Williams painted engines? That seems like such a waste since they look good except for the colorization.

Wellll…Prewar - American Flyer made #565 a very nice Reading 4-4-2…of course it was the 3/16" version built to run on 3 rail O gauge track. Weaver made two very nice Pacifics. I have one and it is a smooth runner.

Well, bear in mind that most engines you’ll find lettered for the Reading were never actually used on that railroad. In some cases they are Pennsylvania RR prototypes! Exceptions: the nice Lionel 4-8-4 (full scale) of a few years back (I believe MTH is going to be offering a more detailed scale-like version); the brass 4-6-2’s (full scale) offered in the last few years- a G1and a G3 if I recall correctly; and the Reading Crusader (full scale) offered by K-Line, I believe. The Reading never had any Berkshires, and to my knowledge a true Reading camelback has never been produced in 3-rail O gauge. Regards-

Hello dan18425! In 1989 Lionel Made a Reading Steamer based on the old postwar 2055. It has Sound of Steam( This was the last engine made with the Sound of Steam) Magne-Traction,Pullmor Motor,And.A 2671 Style Tender with Six Wheel Trucks and Gold Lettering/ Numbers on the Engine and Tender. It also has a 4-6-2 wheel configuration making it a pacific style engine as opposed to the 4-6-4 configuration of the 2055.Check around There’s bound to be one in stock somewhere! As for Williams they’ve made Engines in every color you can think of to give Collectors more choice.Take Care…Keith.
