I have a Testors Model Master No.2914 German Silver Spray paint. I’m painting a resin shell. I want a shiny and reflective stainless steel look. Should I go ahead and use this paint or should I choose and Alcad paint with an airbrush. I want this paint job to look professional. What will a majority of people recommend? If an airbrush would be better what is the most common high quality inexpensive brand?
I’ve painted car models with that paint & it looks a little ‘grainy’ for HO. ‘If it were me’ -I would think of trying a Testors Metalizer or the Alclad products, they are much finer in texture. Try a test shot of your silver on a scrap, that should/will tell you if it is OK for your entire project.
If you do some looking here there are some nice examples of passenger cars sprayed with Alclad. The stuff looks very convincing compared to grey paint.
If you use most silver, alu, grey etc you’ll end up with a “painted look”. Nothing that looks like metal at all.
Generally, those terms are mutually exclusive. If you want the best, be prepared to pay for it (when you’re talking about paints, you’re not talking big dollars anyway).
Alloboard,
you’ve received several good responses over on your airbrush related thread. Whichever airbrush you go for; make sure you practice with it before doing an actual paint job. Getting the hang of an airbrush doesn’t take long. Metaphorically, it’s like when you first learned how to ride a bicycle without training wheels.
Re: Paint
You already purchased the #2914. It’s entirely up to you but why not try it on a scrap sample of plastic? Or better yet, if you have one, a plastic scrap passenger or freight car shell that you can use as test samples. Always a good idea to pick up “junker rail cars” at flea markets or swap meets just for that purpose. I bought an old Bachmann F unit shell for .50 cents at one meet and got a free boxcar shell at another.
You can purchase Alclad #107 and try it over a high-gloss gray tone and then see how you like it. But as you’ve likely seen on my Alclad threads, you need to think about which look you want for your car(s). Check out this thread.
The information was very helpful.
allaboard,
I counted 8 threads of yours just on the first page!!
Couldn’t you combine all of your questions in one thread? Just sayin…
I have a good airbrush which I hardly ever use for models(decorative birds yes) I hardly ever do shiny high gloss surfaces, which is a far as I can see, the only time that you would really need one .Buy high quality brushes instead and then look after them well.
Spray it or brush it, I find silver paint hard to work with. Same with gold. It seems that silver and gold paint has something in it or added to it that results in streaking. What’s up with that?
