Fire Up 611 project steams on

I don’t want to make light of the effort involved in putting a machine like 611 back into working order, but wasn’t she in working order when she left excursion service the last time, and hadn’t she been recently shopped?

I believe Mr. Hendrick’s comments are correct about 611’s condition; isn’t the 1218 in about the same shape? If I recall properly she was just about done with an overhaul when the N.S. cancelled that steam program. Anyone out there have more current info on the condition of both engines?

More steam needed

More steam needed

Leonard, as you recall, the management of Nerdfolk Southern ashcanned it’s steam program several years ago in whick EVERYTHING including the Spencer Shop were donated and sold off. I’m sure you will agree with me that it was very shortsighted on NS’s part seeing how successful UP’s steam program is.

Yes Leornard. But the FRA rules about boilers have changed. She would have to be completely torn down and her boiler inspected and ultra sounded to check for thickness.

And even if the rules for boilers had not changed she has already passed her next scheduled inspection anyway. Which is why i believed the 1218 was a good candidate because her boiler was already torn down. But yes the 611 will have to be torn down and reinspected.
